The general situation of Songjiang |

 Songjiang district lies in the southwest of Shanghai,
the upper course of Huangpu river, possessing an area of 605 square kilometer, 0.63 million
people registering Shanghai for permanent residence. It is the birth place of Shanghai's
history and culture. In 2000, the whole Songjiang district GDP reached RMB 13.1billion,
gross output value of industry and agriculture RMB 42.1billion, including output value of
industry RMB 40.68 billion£»obtaining local financial revenue RMB 1.21 billion; totally
investing long term assets RMB 4.72 billion; domestic retailing social consumable RMB 6.24
billion.
Songjiang will be importantly constructed during 'the tenth Five-Year Plan' of Shanghai, planning an area
of 36 square kilometer and having a population over 250,000 people living in this area in near future.
According to the city planning named "a city with three sectors". The Songjiang metropolitan government takes
the steps of speeding up the new town construction, the industrial developments, modernization of agriculture
and the promotion of tourism. Locating at the southern Huangpu River, Songjiang's city planning and development
is following the demonstrative development of the Songjiang Wushe which is a newly developed modern agricultural
and botanic garden. The prior development is agriculture and green produce, encouraging making revenue by
exporting agricultural produce to the overseas markets. Under the conditions of protecting the natural
environment, Songjiang government will build a center of distributing and growing the green and agricultural
produces. The center will create many new jobs opportunities to the community. Situating at the northeastern

The Industrial region in Songjiang |
 Songjiang is one the national ranking processing industry
and export zone in Shanghai. The Songjiang Industrial region has been honored as level one city. With it
attractive infrastructure and convenient location, there are 261foreign-funded projects, which totally invest
US$25.8 billion, including contractual foreign capita of US$17.8 billion have been successively introduced to
Songjiang Industrial region. More than 30 enterprises among 500 world-class industries, like, American Ford,
British ICI, Japanese Hitachi, German PM£¬French Essilor, and so forth, have competitively invested in Songjiang
Industrial region. The processing industry and export zone of Songjiang Shanghai has been regularly operating
since January 18th 2001. 25 foreign-funded projects have already introduced into the region, totally planning
invested $16.5 hundred million. The first phase construction of Guangda Group of Taiwan finished, having put into
production, annually manufacturing 1million sets of notebook PC. In addition, the Daqun industrial region, l
ocating in the western part of Songjiang, covering an area of 7.1 square kilometer is being built. |
| The agricultural modernization in Songjiang |
 There is a description of Songjiang is a sufficient land
flowing with milk and honey in south of the lower reaches of the Changjiang River (Yangtze River), one of
important manufacturing base of subsidiary agricultural products in Shanghai, possessing 29,249 hectare arable
land. In the past few years, the whole Songjiang has energetically developed a base of botanic and agricultural
garden. They have also built up a base of vegetation and green produce. The government has promoted a project
of 'Six agricultural modernizations' that has been orderly carried out one after another, e.g. highly efficient

RMB 5 hundred million was invested to construct 1000 hectare manufacturing base of exceptional vegetation, 1000
hectare manufacturing base of flower and young plants, with 3000 hectares auxiliary facilities base. Wushe
demonstration region of modern agricultural zone, covering an area of 11.19 square kilometer, has started to be
built. The Shanghai Agricultural Academy of Science, Zhejiang Agricultural University, the Center of Introducing
Animals and Plants of Shanghai have already taken part in the developments of scientific research to exploit
Wushe demonstration region. In the year of 2000, the government projects that top quality cultivation, selective
breeding vegetable species and the key tackling technologically promoting agriculture of Shanghai were chose to
invest and develop in the region. Some green agricultural produces such as watermelon, tomato, shrimp and crab,
has registered and gained national recognized and certificated trade mark, "LU Yuan" produce. |
| The vacation region of Songjiang |
 The geographical position of Songjiang is picturesque and
great with 12 mountaintops lying in the northwest of Shanghai becomes the only mountain forest amongst Shanghai
district. Moon Lake, which is an artificial lake built last year, has a water area of 500 hectares. Those make
Sheshan national park and the natural picturesque scenery as the attractions of traveling and vacation region.
Moreover, Songjiang is a well known olden city with plentiful historical relics and remembrances, holding deeply
cultural foundation. The Cathedral in Sheshan is the biggest one in Far East. And the Mosque is also the oldest
one in Shanghai district. The local residences have the characteristics of the residences in Jiangnan. These are
the pioneers of the Shikumen residence in Shanghai. Under such advantageous conditions, Songjiang is a
film-television paradise, ecological garden with lots of different species of flowers and plants base fascinate
many tourists from overseas and local China. Sheshan national tourist and vacation zone, therefore, is nationally
certified as the first group AAAA level scenery. There are 20 opening sceneries, 15 travel services, and 7
star-rank hotels in the whole Songjiang district. In 2000, 3.3 million tourists came to Songjiang, which created
travelling income RMB 446 million.
Songjiang historically has many nicknames to describe it beauty, named Huating, Yunjian, Rongcheng, Gushui and forth. Each of them precisely describes the nature and the characteristics of the historical city.  However, until the tenth year of Tianbao in Tang dynasty, it has been named 'Songjiang County'. In Yuan dynasty, it was promoted to be Songjiang metropolitan. Before Songjiang politically mapped into Shanghai district, it was Songjiang special region with its own governmental management. After being changed as a part of Shanghai district, Songjiang immediately becomes the center of politics, economy and culture of Shanghai district before Shanghai became city with the port getting very busy. There is a saying describing the financial and business importance of Songjiang that both Suzhou and Songjiang prefecture cities possess half property in the world (China). Coincidently, 2001 is the first year of a new century; and it was also the 1250 anniversary of Songjiang being built up. It is no question that Songjiang is the root of Shanghai, so that the local people of Songjiang was holding a big festival to celebrate the 1250 anniversary of Songjiang's building in autumn. Meanwhile, they would hold the third time of "Root of Shanghai" to promote the tourism and the special cultures of Songjiang, Shanghai and China. It would fully reveal the great historical culture and the huge achievement of Songjiang from executing opening and reform policy of China.

In 2000, the Songjiang government has spent RMB 678 million to build the infrastructure of road, water, electricity and gas. The central city development of Songjiang has reached the standard of the city health and the civilized model district of Shanghai. The planning and development of Songjiang university park and 10 projects are being executed during the tenth Five-Year plan'. It is mainly including the comprehensive traffic commuting network, the high efficient administration center, the international standard business center, and powerful information network. Also, Songjiang is planned to be built an ecosystem park city with high power of support with complete city functions and high level of modernization. By the end of 'the tenth Five-Year plan', the entire area urbanization level will have been achieved over 70%.
